Blu-ray discs arrive at library

Frequently asked questions about Blu-ray discs

Seymour Library is adding Blu-ray discs to its collection of movies and nonfiction films. Blu-ray discs provide much higher definition images and sound quality than DVDs, and they also offer more content and interactive features. This guide will answer many of your questions about them.

Q. Can I play Blu-rays on my DVD player?

A. No. You need a Blu-ray player. Blu-rays also will play on a Sony Playstation 3.

Q. Can I play DVDs on a Blu-ray player?

A. Yes.

Q. Where will I find Blu-rays at the library?

A. They’ll be shelved the same way as our DVDs. Movies will be filed alphabetically by title on the spinners in the Fireplace Room, and nonfiction films will be shelved by subject, with a Dewey decimal number. Blu-ray discs will be added to all collections, for adults, teens and children.

Q. If they’re all shelved together, how will I be able to tell the difference between a Blu-ray and a DVD?

A. Most of the Blu-ray cases are blue and have a Blu-ray logo on the cover. The spine label also will say Blu-ray.

Q. How many Blu-ray discs can I take out at one time?

A. Our borrowing policy remains the same. Patrons may borrow up to five movies at a time, whether they are VHS, DVDs, Blu-rays or a combination of the three.

Q. For how long a time can they be borrowed? Is there an overdue fine?

A. Again, our borrowing policy will remain the same for Blu-rays as for VHS and DVDs. Patrons may borrow them for seven days. The overdue fine is $1 per day per movie.

Q. Who can borrow Blu-ray discs?

A. As with VHS and DVDs, patrons need to live in the library tax district.

Q. Why is the library buying Blu-ray discs?

A. Because our collection needs to evolve with technology. Just as videotapes replaced film reels and DVDs replaced videotapes, eventually Blu-ray discs will replace DVDs. As prices for Blu-ray players continue to fall, more patrons will have them. We will continue to buy both DVD and Blu-ray versions of new movies whenever possible so patrons without access to a Blu-ray player will continue to have access to new movies.
